"Not safe to run in the dark’: how inadequate lighting in public spaces is creating barriers for women"
By Elias Visiontay
Inadequate nighttime lighting significantly affects women’s safety and their ability to exercise or commute, as evidenced by a survey revealing that 59% of women feel unsafe after dark compared to 31% of men. Despite this, councils often cite cost and wildlife concerns to avoid improving lighting. This reluctance may stem from a male-dominated planning industry that overlooks women's needs. How Building, Neighbourhoods, New Yorkers shape waste.
Published by Urban Design Forum

The research highlights key challenges and opportunities in reimagining waste management for multifamily residential buildings in New York City. The report addresses three critical areas: building design, building management, and neighborhood context, offering actionable recommendations and tools for improvement. These include the Waste Typology for visualizing waste systems, Waste Management Guidelines for building staff, and the Neighborhood Assets Tool for assessing local waste infrastructure. The colorful comic-style graphics at the report's end underscore the potential for transforming waste management.
In my opinion, the report provides a valuable framework for advancing New York City's waste system. By integrating these recommendations and tools, officials and stakeholders can drive meaningful progress toward a more efficient, cleaner, and community-focused circular waste system.

The reimagined play space draws on Montessori principles, featuring five zones designed to encourage independence and adventure. It includes areas for water play, sand, climbing, swinging, and sliding, all culminating in a distinctive tunnel made from recycled concrete pipes and vibrant mosaics. The jungle gym is crafted with thin metal sections tailored to children’s anthropometry, ensuring safe and engaging exploration. Reused wooden logs and colorful artwork created by the children add a personal touch. Additional features include mist showers for relief from heat and wind chimes for auditory stimulation.
This thoughtfully designed space not only promotes active play and learning but also highlights sustainability and community involvement, creating a nurturing environment that aligns with educational philosophies and environmental consciousness.
