Eyes On the Canal: Reclamation of a Canal

Canals are unique and crucial ecological assets but often neglected. These systems are crucial in Chennai containing waters from overflowing rivers positioning themselves as flood bastions. The project demonstrates strategies & design in developing long term accountability towards protecting the canals by making it an integral and tangible physical component of the community.

PROGRAME

The project proposes a unified development for the 3.5km stretch by 2 approaches 1) Bringing back the ability to filter, flush and carrying capacity 2) Activating the social-economic system tied to local facilities.

STRATEGY

The project connected the community to the canal by transforming abandoned infrastructure into a vibrant economic hub through the socio-economic action rewards system, the power of action and reward starts and continues with the local community.

DESIGN

The proposed development critically engages 2026 Master plan of the city and the created landuses and developments are complementary to it.

DESIGN

The proposed programmatic development along the Canal focuses on building stronger relationships between the Canal and the multitude of amenities in proximity to it. By connecting streets where large crowds gather and drawing them to key branding and design - the programmatic zoning aims to mitigate overcrowding and instead, encourage the public to explore the canalan its surroundings much more effectively.
